Program Description

The academic minor in French Language and Culture gives students a foundation in the French language, including speaking, reading, writing, and listening, as well as the opportunity to advance their knowledge of French cultures.

With approximately 1.6 million French speakers in the United States alone, French is the fourth most commonly spoken non-English language in the country after Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog (US Census Bureau, 2011). Being proficient in French can open many doors to careers in government, law, international relations/diplomacy, business, hospitality, health professions, and education.

This minor is designed to provide not only necessary and sufficient French language skills, but also an opportunity to explore French history and culture. Elective courses in modern art, music, philosophy, and history reveal rich intersections among linguistic, historical, and multicultural dimensions.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to speak in French in linguistically, socially, and culturally appropriate ways.

  • Understand the complexities of French culture and language to demystify difficulties associated with translating norms and values of the Francophone world.

  • Demonstrate cultural competency based on the study of French language and French history and culture.

  • Analyze and present different views/perspectives on assigned readings.
